Roopkund Lake (locally known as Mystery Lake or Skeletons Lake) is a high altitude (5029 meters) glacial lake with a depth of around 3 meters in the Uttarakhand state of India. This is one of the most famous trekking trails of the Himalayan region in India and witness a lot of mountaineers and expeditionaries arriving at the spot with their backpacks.

What’s the mystery?

Every year as the ice melts in Roopkund during a one-month period, hundreds of ancient human skeletons are seen floating at the edge of the lake. The human skeletal remains are visible at its bottom when the snow melts. There are remnants of more than 300 people. Rediscovered in the year 1942 by Nanda Devi game reserve ranger Hari Kishan Madhwal. With the help of forensics and radiocarbon tests, researchers point to a semi-legendary event where a group of people were killed in a sudden, violent hailstorm in the 9th century. The Anthropological Survey of India conducted a study of the skeletons during the 1950s and some samples are displayed at the Anthropological Survey of India Museum, Dehradun.

3) Bhimkund, Madhya Pradesh

Bhimkund,neelkund

Bheem kund (also known as Neelkund) is a natural water tank and holy place from the era of Mahabharat in Chhatarpur district of Madhya Pradesh, India. The water of kund is so clean and transparent that you can actually clearly see fishes playing in the water. The creatures living under the water are literally visible to certain depths.

What’s the mystery?

There is saying that depth of BhimKund is limitless/endless and till date no one is able to find the actual depth of BhimKund. And this has been proved literally. The archaeologists and the excavators have their best to measure the limits of this Kund but none have succeeded. Few years ago a team from “Discovery channel” visited BhimKund and tried to calculate the depth of Kund but were unable to do so. When a camera was lowered to a depth of 200 feet, a heavy undercurrent of water was observed. Usually, when a man dies under water, his body floats above the surface after his death. Whereas, the body once drowned in Bhimkund, never floats up, and shockingly the body actually goes missing and can never be found back.

One more fact is associated with this place. The Bhimkund is also an indicator of upcoming natural calamities, as examined by the locals. The water level in the Bhimkund rises above upto 15 meters of measure, and this indicates there is a natural calamity about to occur. At the time of Tsunami in 2004, the water level here rose by 15 feet and same is the case at the time of Nepal or other earthquakes. When examiners tried to examine the reason behind this, no result could be found by them. Except for weird creatures and species under water. It was also found that the source connected to this Kund has not been found till date.

Few weeks ago in the early month of June, Lonar lake turned pink. As per samples collected by the forest department, the probable reason for this might be because of the action of Halobacteria and fungus Salina. Another report states that it might be because of the weather changes that have been caused by the cyclonic formation and water level in Lonar Lake going down. Also, as per Gajanan Kharat, who is a member of the Lonar Lake Conservation and Development Committee, the mysterious change in the lake’s colour might be probably because of the proliferation of special algae in the lake.
