16 Most Cruel Torture Techniques Ever Invented In History
Before the Internet or Google search, truth or dare became a mainstream thing, the human mind had terrible ways to punish alleged transgressors, villains, witches, and anyone else to extract information or confess to crimes (which they sometimes did not commit). As you’re all familiar with the old standbys: hanging, burning, stoning. Yawn. But the most disturbed fact about torture’s cruelty isn’t its existence, but the way people have introduced a depraved sense of innovation (and even happiness) into the creation of devices designed to cause pain.
To prove my point, I will list here to you 16 most brutal torture techniques ever invented in history:
Closely related to impalement, this gruesome punishment entailed having the victim sit on the pyramid-shaped cradle, after which they would be forced down on it slowly by ropes (attached around the victim’s waist) with the pointy top inserted into their anus or vagina. With the downward pressure caused by the victim's body, the muscles around the orifice would eventually tear thereby impaling the victim.
To add to the overall humiliation, the victim was usually naked and the prop was rarely washed. So if the torture did not kill you, the infection contracted from it would. This torture method is also known as the nightwatch because when pressure is applied to certain parts of the body, the person cannot fall asleep.
2) Blood Eagle
The blood eagle is a ritual method of execution mentioned in Norse literature. As the executioner, you'd cut open the back of the victim and expose his/her lungs by twisting the ribs outwards to make them look like wings. Very Hannibal-ish if you ask me.
3) The Tub Torture
Also known as ‘sitting in the tub,’ and Scaphism the convicted person would be enclosed in a wooden tub with only their head sticking out. After that, the executioner/torturer would color their faces with milk and honey; and soon, flies would begin to feed on them. The victim was also fed regularly and would end up swimming in their excrement. After a few days, maggots and worms would swallow their body as they decayed alive.
4) The Brazen Bull
5) Heretics Fork
This invention was made to deliver the “merited” torture to witches and heretics. It consisted of a metal piece with two opposed bi-pronged forks attached to a belt or strap. One end of the device was pushed under the chin, the other to the sternum, and the strap was used to secure the victim’s neck to the tool while the victim hung from the ceiling or was somehow suspended so that they could not sleep. If their heads dropped, the prongs would pierce their throat and chest. Guys, your generation is damn lucky.
6) Crucifixion
Originally practiced in ancient times, though it still exists in some countries (like Saudi Arabia) today; it is one of the most well-known execution methods due to the crucifixion of Jesus Christ. It is a deliberately slow and painful execution where the victim is tied or nailed to a large wooden cross and left to hang until they die, which usually takes days.
7) Lead Sprinkler
At first sight, it looks like a holy sprinkler to you, but in reality it's a bit more complex. As the torturer/executioner, you have to pour lead, tar, boiling water or boiling oil in the lower half of the sphere. Then it was used to torture victims by dripping the contents onto their stomach or other body parts like the eyes. Using this device the torturer would proceed to pour molten silver on the victim’s eyes which resulted in agonizing pain and eventual death.
8) Thumbscrew Torture
Though there are many variations of this torture device, the thumbscrew or ‘pilliwinks’ all function the same. They were designed to slowly crush not only the fingers and toes, but larger devices were also used to crush knees and elbows. There is also the Head Crusher, which could do the same for heads. It’s primary intention was to extract confessions from victims and it was first used in medieval times. It feels very painful man.
9) The Rack Torture
As you can see the demonstration in image, it was one of the most painful form of medieval torture which was designed to dislocate every joint of the victim’s body. The device was made up of a wooden frame with two ropes fixed to the bottom and the other two tied into the handle on top. Once the victim was tied and placed on top of the rack, the torturer would proceed to turn the handle. Eventually, the victim would be stretched till his limbs were dislocated.
The torturers, however, (just to make sure those limbs were indeed dislocated) would continue to turn the wheel until the limbs were completely torn off the victim’s body.
10) The Rat Torture
You know it is one of the most Spooky forms of rat torture involves placing large rodents inside a half-cage and atop a restrained person's abdomen. Then, the cage is slowly heated. Desperate to escape the heat, the rodents begin to burrow through the only soft surface it can find: the victim's flesh. it sounds very horrifying guys.
11) The Chair of Torture
Also known as the Judas Chair, it was a very bad and cruel device of the middle ages, and was being used until the late 1800's in Europe, this chair was layered with 500 to 1,500 spikes on every surface with tight straps/ropes to restrain its victim. Or in one version two bars pushed the arms against the armrests for the spikes to penetrate the flesh even further. Made of iron, it also contained spaces for heating elements beneath the seat.
It was often used to scare people into giving confessions as they watched others being tortured on the device.
12) Breast Ripper
Isn't the name pretty self-explanatory? Though women were also subject to many of the torture techniques on this list, this was one that was specifically designed for them.
It was used to cause major blood loss, the metal claws, which were often red hot, would be placed on the exposed breasts as the spikes penetrated beneath the skin. It would then be pulled or jerked causing large chunks of flesh to come off with it. Do you felt that pain?
13) Republican Marriage
Republican marriage was a method of execution that allegedly occurred in Nantes (a city in France), employed by Jean-Baptiste Carrier during the French Revolution
It involves tying a naked man and woman together and drowning them into icy water. When water was unavailable, they would just be run through with swords or bayonets. This was the preferred method used to execute nuns and priests during that time.
14) Spanish Donkey
Also known as wooden horse, Spanish donkey or cavaletto squarciapalle, is one of the torture devices during the Spanish Inquisition, this is probably one of the most gruesome of them all.
It was a torture device, of which there existed two variations; both cause pain by using the subject's own weight by keeping the legs open, tied with ropes from above, while lowering down the subject, and in other one the torturer would add varying weights to the victim’s feet until finally the wedge sliced through the victim’s body.
15) Saw Torture
In this method, the victim is hung upside down, so that the blood will rush to their heads and keep them conscious during the long torture. The torturer would then Saw through the victim’s bodies until they were completely sawed in half. Most were cut up only in their abdomen to prolong their agony.
It was mainly used because the tools required were found in most houses and no complex devices were required. It was a cheap way to torture and kill a victim who was often accused of: witchery, adultery, murder, blasphemy or even theft. Doesn't you find it cheap and very painful.
16) Pair of Anguish
If there was ever a torturer's manual , there's probably a line that reads, if you find a hole, make it bigger. Also called choke pear, was a pear shaped instrument whose ends were inserted into one of the victim's orifices: the vagina for women, the anus for homosexuals and the mouth for liars and blasphemers causing them immense pain. Sometimes, they'd even fit spikes at the end of these machines. Holy Sh*t!
